Terms and Conditions of the Competition1.The project name RIGA FORUM 2008: Youth Competition “CITY and DESIGN 2008” 2.Competition organisers Riga City Council, Art Academy of Latvia, “Design Information Centre” Ltd, Design and Art Riga Secondary School, “Riga Managers School” Ltd. The competition will take place from May 6, 2008 till September 19, 2008. 3.Competition aim The aim of the competition is to increase the interest of young people, students and pupils in developing design ideas that are conceptually contemporary and relevant to city environment for improving Riga public outdoor space, as well as promote cooperation between municipality and higher education institutions, schools and young entrepreneurs. 4. Competition entry Competition is open to young entrepreneurs, students or student groups (maximum 3 people per group) . Contestants are: - Pupils of schools
- Students of higher education institutions
- Young entrepreneurs (under 33 years of age)
- Young artists and designers (under 33 years of age)
5.Competition themes – City and Design 1. Design and a person 2. Design and services 3. Design and innovation 4. Design and transport 5. Design and tourism 6. Design for recreation 6. Competition requirements: - Contestants should present sketches in accordance with competition terms of different urban design objects.
- Contestants may submit one or several ideas.
- Contestants should develop proposals for design elements and structures.
Contestants can freely choose the name of their work or project in accordance to competition themes. 7. Submission time Competition works and projects should be submitted by September 19, 2008. 8. Competition Terms The competition work or project should be developed in Latvian or English. Each contestant may submit an unlimited number of works. Forms of presentation: all competition works should be performed on hard panels in free technique. The size of panels: A1 (594 X 841mm). It is preferable to submit the work or project in a digital form, as well. For the work or project the contestant should attach a description in Microsoft Word format and sketches/drawings in A1 format. Visualization: a) sketches of small-scale architecture and design elements or drawings (at the author’s discretion – for project clarification); b) the design object placement in environment. Description should contain: a) creative and functional concept of the project; b) description of the used materials. The description should not exceed 2 500 words. The competition work or cover of the project description should bear the name of the category, in which the work is submitted, and the title. It should be accompanied by an envelope (labelled with the same name), containing the name and surname of the author, name of the company and position / higher education institution, faculty and year of studies / school and class, as well as the phone number and e-mail address of the author. The envelope will not be opened until the winners are determined. The competition work or project description should be submitted by sending an email to rigaforum@rms.lv or in a CD format to Riga Managers School, Elizabetes Street 45/47, Riga LV-1010, phone number +371 67334346 by September 19, 2008. 9. Evaluation Competition works will be judged by a specially selected panel including representatives of the Riga City Council, Art Academy of Latvia, ”Design Information Centre” Ltd, Design and Art Riga Secondary School, ”Riga Managers School” Ltd, as well as invited independent experts. The judges will review and evaluate all works submitted within the deadline. 10. Results The panel will judge works and projects within 30 days after the submission date. Competition results will be announced on October 20, 2008. Work descriptions will be published in youth conference papers. Three best authors of works and projects will be awarded prizes: The first place – 1000 LVL The second place – 700 LVL The third place – 500 LVL The fourth place - 150 LVL The fifth place - 150 LVL Winners of the competition will have an opportunity to present their works at the youth conference “Riga Forum 2008: City and Design 2008” to be held on October 31, 2008 at Radisson SAS Daugava Hotel Riga. 11. Other provisions By submitting the work the author witnesses that it is created by himself/herself and he/she assumes responsibility of respecting the third party copyright, and that the author agrees that in case of awarding of the work the competition organisers have the right without additional payment to display to public, publish and reproduce it according their own discretion. All sums of premiums are fixed before in law provided payment of import duties. The contestants agree that the submitted works are available to public. In case the submitted works are used in practice, a separate agreement will be concluded between the holder of the rights and the user. The holder of the rights himself/herself is responsible for conclusion of the agreement and reservation of the rights.
